Meet Susan and Lexi

We’re a mother-daughter writing team with two imaginations, plenty of opinions, and a shared belief that disabled kids deserve to see themselves at the center of great stories.

Lexi brings lived experience, unexpected ideas, humor, and some very strong opinions to our brainstorming sessions. Susan brings years of writing experience, a feel for story, and some strong opinions of her own. Susan does most of the physical writing, but every book grows from the characters, conversations, questions, and ideas we develop together.

In other words, these aren’t simply Lexi’s stories translated onto the page—or Susan’s stories inspired by Lexi. They’re ours.

Meet Lexi

Lexi is an author and disability advocate with an alarming addiction to audiobooks and YouTube. She has cerebral palsy from kernicterus, uses a wheelchair, and communicates through augmentative and alternative communication, better known as AAC.

Together with her sister Hannah, Lexi runs the TikTok channel HannahandLexiH, where they explore disability-related topics with honesty, humor, and very little patience for awkward stereotypes.

Lexi loves reading, adaptive dance, and almost any kind of adventure—as long as she can eventually come home to the quiet of her room, her audiobooks, and a reliable internet connection.

Meet Susan

Susan is an author, former medical writer, and mom of five very cool adult children. After years of writing about medicine, science, and other serious subjects, she discovered that making up stories and getting fictional children into trouble was considerably more fun.

In her spare time, Susan loves gardening with her husband Ken, reading, running, hiking, and almost any high-stakes adventure compatible with aging knees. She also loves dogs—and has never met one she didn’t like at least as much as most humans.

We love speaking with students, educators, families, librarians, conference attendees, corporations, and community groups.

Our interactive presentations combine storytelling, humor, disability representation, AAC, writing, creativity, and candid conversation. We’re especially happy when audiences arrive with lots of questions—the thoughtful ones, the funny ones, and even the questions people sometimes feel nervous about asking.

Susan and Lexi live in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they continue to write books, plan adventures, and disagree cheerfully about what their characters should do next.
